Foreword

Talofa lava, Taloha ni, Fakalofa lahi atu, Malo e lelei, Bula vinaka, Kia Orana and warm Pacific greetings to you all!

We thank God for his guidance as we begin 2024. Last year, 2023, saw another successful Pasifika Fusion Festival, our students showcased their talents and creativity. Thank you to all the schools and students who participated. Also, to our Pasifika and wider community for your continual support.

In loving memory
Julie Etuale

Last year had its challenges, including the passing of our dear friend, teacher, colleague, and sister Julie Etuale (aka Jewels). Julie served as a long-standing Pasifika Fusion committee member and her family have also volunteered for Pasifika Fusion for many years. Her sons are all alumni of Pasifika Fusion. We will miss Julie’s dedication, talents, creativity, attention to detail and presence at Pasifika Fusion this year and continue to pray for her family. Julie significantly contributed to our Pasifika Fusion legacy from coordinating Wearable and Visual arts to organising and making the gift baskets, committee uniforms, volunteer t-shirts, water bottle labels, laminating title pages and land yards. She also ran many of the behind the scene activities including hosting the Pasifika Fusion fonos in her classroom (or staffroom) at Te Kura o Wairau. Rest in love, Jewels.

Throughout the years, Pasifika Fusion festival has grown to include more schools, students, volunteers, Pasifika communities, and even more categories since its humble beginnings in 2005. This year, Pasifika Fusion is celebrating its 20th anniversary and our annual festival will run over three days from 3 - 4 July. We will also include primary and intermediate schools through the Pasifika Fusion Legacy event on 2 July.

The Pasifika Fusion 2024 theme encompasses the past, present, and future:

New Pasifika Fusion Logo

The celebration of 20 years for Pasifika Fusion has brought about new beginnings, such as, the launch of our new Pasifika Fusion logo. Our logo aims to capture the essence of ‘Pasifika Fusion’ and is inclusive of all Pasifika cultures. The Tanoa represents the Pasifika Fusion trophy and the gathering of people. The Tanoa is used in different ways to welcome, celebrate, socialise and connect with each other. This relates back to Pasifika Fusion as a Pasifika festival that brings communities together to uplift and celebrate the talents and successes of our Pasifika Peoples and cultures.

Logo Designer: Ishmael Tavita Fa’aiuaso

I attended St Peters College and participated in Pasifika Fusion from Year 9 to year 13 (2017 - 2021). In my final year, I was the Cultural Leader and am thankful for the opportunity to work alongside my peers, teachers and wider Pacific school community. As a New Zealand born Samoan, Pasifika Fusion, provided a leadership opportunity where I could embrace my Samoan identity and learn about other Pacific cultures. The people I have met and memories I have made at the festival are invaluable. I would not be where I am today without my Pasifika Fusion experience, as I was able to pursue my passion for design and art. I am now in my third year studying a Bachelor of Design at Massey University in Wellington.

Triumphant Pasifika Legacies:

A Reflection on the Dawn Raids

“How can Pasifika youth be living legacies who honour those directly and indirectly impacted by the Dawn Raids?“

Living legacy of Pasifika people in Aotearoa

The living legacy of Pasifika people refers to the ongoing and dynamic expression of their cultural heritage, traditions, values, and contributions across generations. It interweaves all elements that Pasifika communities actively carry forward, adapt, and teach future generations.

All Pasifika legacies are a living testament to the resilience, identity, and continuity of Pasifika cultures in the face of historical challenges and contemporary changes. For Pasifika in Aotearoa New Zealand and in the diaspora, the living legacy of the Pasifika people is not static; it evolves as communities navigate the complexities of the modern world. It is sustained through the active engagement of individuals, families, and communities in preserving, celebrating, and innovating upon their rich cultural heritage.

The Dawn Raids in Aotearoa

For early Pasifika migrants, Aotearoa New Zealand was seen as a ‘Land of Milk and Honey’, a country that provided better work and education opportunities. But the mid 1970s brought challenges upon Pasifika peoples as we were racially targeted as illegal immigrants or “overstayers” in the Dawn Raids campaign. In response, Pasifika Peoples protested through collective action, and groups emerged to provide advocacy and social support for Pasifika communities.

The Dawn Raids left a lasting impact on Pasifika communities in Aotearoa, and Pasifika peoples continue to experience racial discrimination whilst continuing to advocate for equity and justice. The Government's formal apology in 2021 acknowledged the harm caused by The Dawn Raids, paving the way for healing. The apology signaled a transition for Pasifika communities, particularly its youth, to envision a positive future as part of the fabric of Aotearoa New Zealand society. Pasifika peoples are making significant contributions across all facets of Aotearoa New Zealand society - including health, education, arts, sports, media, government and business. Ultimately, Pasifika youth in Aotearoa New Zealand are living legacies and it is important that they continue to honour and uphold our past for current and future generations.

Sponsorship

As a non profit organisation, our purpose and vision has always been community driven for our Pacific Peoples. Organising and running Pasifika Fusion is no easy task as the operational aspects of our programme continues to grow. Our Pasifika Fusion festival reach beyond the Manawatu-Wanganui region to include schools and communities in other regions. With continual increase in interest, yet limited sources for funding, we recognise the need for a legacy in partnership and sponsorships with corporate, organisations, communities and individuals for the sustainability and legacy of Pasifika Fusion for years to come.

Pasifika Fusion provides the opportunity for our Pasifika students to embrace their culture in and beyond the educational curriculum. Our Pasifika Fusion students have gone on to be talented alumni around the world, in various fields and positively talk of Pasifika Fusion to this day. Additionally, Pasifika Fusion has provided pathways for the wider Pacific and local community through educational opportunities and has bridged the relational gaps between Pacific students’ families and schools. We hope to continue making a meaningful impact by empowering Pacific students to thrive and succeed throughout their educational journeys.

Therefore, in honouring the legacy built over the past 20 years and the achievement of the significant 20 year milestone, we have launched a three (3) tier sponsorship model for Pasifika Fusion. The 3 tier sponsorship model sets out 3 different monetary levels that sponsors can contribute to Pasifika Fusion. The minimum price is listed out in each tier. However, additional sponsor amounts in the same tier can receive further benefits through negotiation.

Alongside sponsoring, organisations and people can also get involved by holding a booth stall, providing, in-kind donations are appreciated and can be further discussed via email 20pasifika.fusion@gmail.com
